There has been a lot of talk about expelling toxins from our bodies through our feet. What are toxins, well, examples that might cause toxins to build in our bodies could be bad air (pollution) or preservatives in our foods and soaps (chemicals), heavy metal exposure, even the water we drink. When this occurs, a heavy accumulation of toxins can build at a cellular level.

Honestly, I could not find any research that proved that detoxing our bodies has any real effect on our health. However, having worked in the Holistic Spa Industry, I can report that after a detox program, people express they feel better, are more energized, have less/no headaches, improved eyesight, less pain from arthritis and from symptoms of agent orange. I am not a medical professional, so I can’t make claims that any of this is really true, but I can’t perceive that the process of a detox would be harmful or unsafe.

With that said, I would like to give you some foot detox information.


There seem to be some choices when choosing a foot detox for yourself. Maybe you have seen foot detox patches in the stores or in catalogs. These look like very big wound care band aids. They are placed on the arch of each foot, generally at night while you are sleeping, then removed in the morning and thrown away. The patch goes on white and when removed it has a visible change in color showing the toxins that have been removed. They usually turn a dark, dirty orange, brown, or black. This discoloration supposedly shows that the patch worked and that toxins were removed through your feet.

Epsom Salts Soaks have long been a favorite of mine. I fill a plastic dish tub from my kitchen full of hot to warm water (your preference) with a cup of Epsom Salts. If you appreciate aroma therapy, place about 8 drops of your favorite essential oil. Lavender, Peppermint, or Eucalyptus are some favorites of mine.

Stir and let the feet soak in this water for 30 minutes or until the water temperature is no longer to your liking. My Mother told me years ago that this would help get rid of the “icky ooze” in my body and help me feel better. And, I have to say, it has always worked for me.

I have noticed in the stores, you can find a foot mask made with bentonite clay. You would spread this clay on the soles of your feet for a prescribed time then wash it off with warm water.

Then, there is the optimal option of an ionic foot detox. You can experience such a treatment by going to a Spa facility that offers this service. Personally, a day at the Spa would be greatly appreciated. Or you can invest in your own machine, however this is an expensive venture.


The IonCleanse is a professional foot detox system that is often found in spas, holistic practitioner offices, and alternative medicine locations.

This process places a positive charge to the water in the foot bath. The theory here is that the positive charge will attract the negative charged toxins through your feet. Think magnets, if you are a science geek.

Actually, I understand that the ocean is charged with negative ions so we might get the same benefits by soaking in the ocean. Sounds like a tropical vacation may be on my To Do list. I’ll be sure to let you know if it works!

When experiencing this type of detox, you will be sure to remove all ankle and toe jewelry as the metals will react to the water solution. Remember, the idea of this detox is to remove metals and other toxins from your body through your feet via the electrical positive/negative reactions created in the water.

Once your feet are placed in the detox foot bath, the water will be charged (this is not like an electrocution) to generate positive and negative ions. It is through this process that the ions create a neutralization. The apparent removal of charged particles from the body seem to change the color of the water your feet are in. I just love this science stuff.

Some say this is evidence that the toxins are being removed from your body, but the color change could come from the chemical reactions between the salts and the other chemicals in the water once it is charged.

If you really want to understand all the scientific stuff about this process you can check out this objective assessment of an Ionic Footbath (IonCleanse), published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health.


As with any detox, there are possible side effects. However, when you are doing a 30-minute foot bath or foot mask detox at home, it is unlikely you will notice anything but a feeling of relaxation.

Side effects might include an achiness similar to flu, but I am not expecting anything like that from the patch. I have never tried the foot patch detox so I can not speak with authority regarding this method. Let me know if you have any issues with this one. I would be interested to know.


Just as a warning, if you have diabetes, take a blood thinner, or wear a pacemaker, you should definitely check with your doctor before you try a foot detox of any kind. It is always better to be safe than sorry as they tell us.


Traditional Chinese practitioners and many of us who partake in holistic methods in treating our general health believe that we have meridians/zones running from the feet to the top of our head. These zones run through the feet and affect every organ, gland, and system in our body. So, although Western Medicine does not have any studies that prove a foot detox will remove toxins from your body, there are many of us out here who do believe it works. In fact, it is a regular part of my good health routine! You, however, will get to make your own decisions on this matter.

  1. Thanks for writing this article on foot detox information. Foot detox offers many benefits, but the most credible one is that they provide a relaxing experience. I always enjoy a warm foot soak, especially if they add extra salts and essential oils to the water. Foot soaks can increase circulation, clean the skin. It also relieves  my body aches and pains most times

    I have heard of foot detox and have also used it a few times. I also want to believe that it helps release toxins because the relaxation and feeling of lightness that comes after those detox sessions might just be more that a placebo effect thingy. I haven’t used the patches yet but I heard that works even better and is more convenient. I intend to try that out soon, though. Our body needs to get rid of these toxins that we are constantly faced with.

    • Alex, you are in for a treat if you go to the Spa! I’d love to hear about that experience.  At home, you can get a dish tub, like the one you wash dishes in and put in the epsom salts and essential oils. Then add the warm water and let your feet soak. The Spa may have different levels of detox for your sessions so go and explore. You will absolutely love the experience. Miss Linda
